What do I need to start a home based production/recording studio?

By TM
I have gotten tons of emails asking me to compile a list of what you most definitely need when it comes to starting your production/recording studio in your home.

1. A computer that has a decent amount of RAM and a good processor. Anything with a dual core processor along with at least 2 gigs of ram will do you good. Personally, I have maximized the amount of ram that my computer can hold (8 gigs) and am running Vista 64bit edition. As for buying a computer.. In my opinion, If you put together your own computer, not only will you learn more about computer hardware, but you can save money. Tigerdirect is a really cheap site that will allow you to purchase computers/computer parts for extremely low prices.

2. Picking a DAW (digital audio workstation) is necessary. Find one that you are comfortable with. FL studio is my DAW of choice, but there are many out there. Reason is very popular along with Cakewalk Sonar. The prices vary. There are trials at the websites of these programs. Try them all out and see which one you feel most comfortable with.

3. Buying an audio interface. I recommend the M-Audio Fast Track Pro. This will allow you to record audio into your computer, and monitor the output of your tracks.

4. Getting some decent Studio Monitors. I have had my KRK rokit 5s for almost four years now and let me tell you, for being so inexpensive, they have helped me create many professional quality productions.

5. Midi Controller Getting a Midi controller will make your life much easier. Even if you are not a skilled piano player, it will help you map out your tracks better, and also will allow you to record automations with hardware.

Those are the basic components that you will need, along with the passion and desire to learn how the programs and hardware work. Keep up to date on my blog, because I will be updating it daily with new content rich tips on FL Studio and other DAWs.
As for the site I recommend purchasing these products.. I would definitely go with

I have been ordering through them for years. They have the most reasonable prices (willing to price match) and the FASTEST shipping.

Deadmau5.. a proud FL Studio User

By TM
There is an interesting article on Deadmau5's opinion of FL Studio. Also, if you have FL Studio 8, and you go into the cool stuff folder, you can see a demo of how Deadmau5 structures his tracks. It's quite interesting to see a professional's style in FL Studio.

Free Sample Pack Download

By TM
VIP-Zone-Samples offers a free sample pack to get you producers started with some good quality samples. I've been purchasing samples from them for as long as they have been around. Their percussion elements and kick drums are very quality. Ninety Percent of the samples that come with FL Studio are terrible.
Go to
Click here to download the samples.

Once you have downloaded them, go to Here and download the free version of Winrar.

Once Winrar is installed you can then open up your sample pack.Once it is open highlight all of the samples within the rar file. Right Click and then select extract to a specific folder. You will then see a tree display. Click on the hard disk that FL Studio is installed onto. Then Click Program Files. Then Imageline. Then FL STUDIO 8, Then Data, Then Patches. Extract them into that folder. Now when you open up FL STUDIO all of your new samples will be present and usable to drag into your sequencer.
Enjoy!
